  • Description
    LOCATION:

The Thatched Cottage is situated in the Breckland Village of Shipdham, Norfolk. The village lies approximately 5 miles equidistant of the market towns of East Dereham and Watton. This location provides very easy access to Norwich (18 miles) and major routes to A11 and M11 to London (approx 95 miles). The village provides local shops, post-Office public houses and a primary School, doctors' surgery and garage facilities. Just 30 minutes from the coast and 45 minutes from the Norfolk Broads. The cottage lies within the heart of this village community.

    DESCRIPTION:
A substantial character property providing a fabulous family home. This cottage combines an interesting history and features, convenient location and abounds with modern comforts. The spacious light-filled accommodation is finished to a high specification throughout and the thoughtful design and layout lends itself well to modern family living. Oak, granite and natural materials are the order of the day! Viewing is essential to fully appreciate the many little luxuries within.

    HISTORY AND CONSTRUCTION
The Thatched Cottage is believed to date from the late 16th Century, originally a single-bay, open-hall house. There are later additions to both ends with large inglenook fire places and chimneys dating from 17th and 18th centuries.
During the late 1980's the entire cottage was dismantled, leaving only the chimneys standing and the oak frame was re-erected on new foundations and a brick plinth. Most of the original oak beams were retained and new oak incorporated, where necessary, and a new roof was constructed and re-thatched in Norfolk water reed. The cottage was extended to form a "T" shape using cavity block construction and Norfolk clay pantiles at the rear.
The property was once listed Grade 2 but was removed from the register on completion of the aforementioned major renovation and is now free from any listed building restrictions.

The cottage has been recently and tastefully extended by the present owners using a feature green English oak, pegged and braced gable frame.
This has created a large farm-house style kitchen and dining area which, of course, has an Aga. Upstairs boasts a spectacular master bedroom-suite with the green oak frame and window as its main feature.
